Non AI lens on Nikon FE

If I have a Nikon FE with the AI version of the Nikon F bayonet. If the only
standard lens available is a Nikkor H Auto 50mm F2 what effect will this
have on the metering?
Will I have any metering at all
I can do without the internal metering anyway.

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

Some of the "E" type lenses are very good, and they are usually quite cheap.
(I have a couple that I paid around $70 for.) I just bought another 75-150
mm zoom from eBay last month for $58. (this gives me two of them) Its Zoom
mechanism is a bit loose, but it is optically excellent, and if I don't
point it straight up or straight down, the loose zoom doesn't matter.....

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

The 50mm f/1.8 is supposed to be quite good. The 50mm f/1.4 is supposed
to be very variable (you have to be a bit lucky to get a really good one).
The 55mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor is fantastically sharp, but I find that it
flattens three-dimensional objects (= not so good for general
photography, great for macro & documentation). Deciding what a *good*
lens is isn't always simple.
If you really want the best quality wide open, you should consider a
couple of famous German brands...
Again, hearsay, but the 75-150 zoom has many admirers (if you like that
sort of thing), the 100mm f/2.8 is supposed to be good and the 50mm
f/1.8 has the same optics as the "normal" AI version, but without
multicoating. In all cases, the mechanics are cheaper and probably not
as durable (though I'd suppose better than most current AF production).
My own tip is to aim for the 35mm f/2.0 and the 105mm f/2.5 instead.
But then, there are as many different tips as there are people (and it
also depends on what kind of pictures you want to take).

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

Anyone in UK or EU have anything with good optics diaphragm and focus
movements.
I dont care if the cosmetic appearance is rough as long as it is properly
usable.
I have heard that for a 50mm Nikkor you can use it wide open with pretty
good results.
True or Bull droppings? I know that for a 50mm f 1.8 at f4 the damn thing is
brilliant.
Are the E series worth bothering with?

In article <slrneig30m.dra.gsm@cable.mendelson.com>,
The FE is designed to accept non-Ai lenses.

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

Unless, as I pointed out at the very beginning, you unlock & raise the
coupling tab...

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

The real problem is that when you mount the lens it will probably
damage the AI coupling ring. At that point the cost of the repair will
be more than the camera is worth.

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

Depends on the lens.
Older Nikon lenses have a 'skirt' on the aperture ring.
Filing away a ~60 degree wedge of the skirt will convert the
lens to AI. This used to be a common DIY conversion if one
was handy with a metal file and a screwdriver. Remove
the screws holding the chrome lens mount to the lens, remove
the aperture ring, crawl on the rug looking for the little
spring [and sometimes ball bearing] that make the aperture
ring 'click', mount the ring carefully in a vise between
soft pine wood blocks and have at it. Needless to say
a sloppy AI conversion will lower the value of a lens.
Professional jobs use an end-mill:
http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-107.html
Google [verb (c) Google Inc, a subsidiary of Evil U'Ltd.] for
"AI modification" or "AI conversion" for more info. There are
still a few people who offer the service for a reasonable
price, usually less than the lens will increase with value.
If you have a 'tick-mark' Nikkor or some other collectable
fetish sell it to a collector and buy a modern lens instead.
3rd party lenses may not have a skirt on the ring and thus
require the addition of a tab to engage the AI tab on the
camera body. A small post/screw/pin would also work if
you have a set of miniature taps and the ring is metal.

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

Not sure how professional shops do it (so don't try grinding yourself). May
involve grinding away some metal to leave a little right angled tab in the
appropriate place that engages the coupling lever. If the lens has
sufficient clearance from the mount to allow the addition of a glued on tab,
this will work just as well.

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

Just wondering... What do they do to a pre-AI lens to make it AI'd? I
don't recall every seeing one...

Re: Non AI lens on Nikon FE

It's usually easy to modify a pre AI lens by gluing a little plastic tab on
to the outside of the lens mount to engage the meter coupling lever. It
only needs to protrude by about 1mm or less from the back of the lens to do
the job and most lenses seem to have clearance room to accomodate this.
Then you will have full, open lens metering.
I did this recently for a Nikon FE with an old Tokina 135mm lens, using a
little slice of curved plastic from a black film casette canister and a blob
of Krazy Glue. Took less than a minute. It's nore or less invisible and
works perfectly.
