Film is obselete?

Hi, I am thinking of getting a film SLR camera for Christmas this year
and I was kind of worried that maybe soon people won't be selling film
or developing film any more. Is there any chance of the price of film
skyrocketing and the price of developing film skyrocketing?
The guy at the store told me that the only difference now that digital
out is that there isn't as much variety different of film available
anymore. He told me that film costs the same.
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Film is obselete?

I made the same goof, 2 2/3 stops is past f/16 is f/40.
Not a problem, shoot at f/10, ISO 100 and 1/1000 second.

Re: Film is obselete?

Mean distance Sun to Earth 149,600 Km
Mean distance Sun to Mercury 57,910 Km
Intensity of sunlight on Earth set as 1 Arbitrary Unit.
Intensity of sunlight on Mercury = Intensity of sunlight on Earth *
Distance Sun to Earth Squared / Distance sun to Mercury Squared
= 1 * 149,600^2 / 57,910^2
= 6.6735
Call it 2 2/3's stops
2. 2/3's stops over F16 is F101.6
So on Mercury it is the Sunny F101.6 rule.
It'll be a real bitch to find a lens; maybe a pinhole camera would
work?

Take a 'lude John. What's next, can't insult a political party

Re: Film is obselete?

The quality of development (i.e. fresh chemicals, good color, etc) has
plummetted over the last couple of years; it is hard to be sure you are using
a good lab. Also, the availability of slide film (i.e. E6) is not as good and
the processing is even harder to find. I live in a northern suburb of
Minneapolis and my only options are to pay high prices to Qualex (as Costco
no longer forwards development to them from the Kodak kiosk), mail order, or
to drive it 20 miles across town with several hours to turn it around.
In short ... the convenience of film is being stripped away rapidly.

Re: Film is obsolete?

That's quite contrary to my experience as a financial analysts and loan
officer for companies with sales in excess of $500 million.
Even 25 years ago, when I left the business, well run, [and some not so
well run], companies had plans and projections out the wazoo. Most of
the planning, [financial, political, economic, including both supply and
demand sides, R+D, and so on] was well done. Er, not that that prevented
the occasional odd charge or new found inventory "profits" to help even
out quarterly earnings figures.

No, it seems most don't plan so far ahead.

Re: Film is obselete?

With a daytime temp hot enough to melt LEAD, I'd say you'd have to have a
fully Nig cooled camera and use even slower film at the fastest speed.

Re: Film is obselete?

Yes: P3200TMZ - I _love_ this film. I guess technically it's not such a
great film, it has grain the size of texas - far grainier than other
similar speed films. But it is this huge grain that appeals to me. It
gives a very unique look that is just perfect for natural light
portraits. Get right in close on the face with this film and the results
are just gorgeous.
I don't mind elitechrome 100 - seems to give a slightly warm image,
compared to Sensia which generally tends toward a cooler blue-green
tone. Sensia is more readily available than elitechrome around here, so
I tend to buy sensia more often.
