Layer Thumbnails

Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1
Windows XP-Pro w/SP2
When I create a new adjustment layer, the new layer thumbnail on the layers
tab has a small circle in the middle, half white and half black.
This only happens with photos taken with my Canon EOS 30D. With my old
camera, an Olympus E-10, the layer thumbnails have an icon that is related
to the layer.
Is there anything going on here that I need to be concerned about? The
layer functions appear to work normally, except for the icon.

Still that way in CS. I think it's to conserve space in the Layers
Palette when there are lots of layers. It doesn't really matter that much.

Eureka! Thanks for the valuable information. It turns out that the
proportion of the CMOS sensor on the Canon 30D is 3:2. And therein lies the
problem. If I crop the photo to almost any proportion other than 3:2, the
layer thumbnails are again displayed as they should be. But at 3:2 or
anything close to 3:2, they disappear again.
It does seem kind of bizarre though and I have to wonder what Adobe's
thinking was. I wonder too if later versions of photoshop resolved this
issue.

This has to do with the orientation of the image, landscape or portrait,
and the ratio of the dimensions. Rotate the image 90º, make an AL and
see the difference.

You can set the size of the icons (and how they look) in the layer
preferences.
