Layer pallet questions

Upgraded from PS 7 to PS CS2. I notice a difference between the layer
pallets on both versions in that PS 7 has a check box next to the
view/hide layer icons and PS CS2 doesn't. In PS 7 the box was used to
select the layer. In CS2 I just click on the layer. Is this correct or
am I missing a setting in CS2? Not a big deal, just curious.

Just like the interface changes 3->4, 4->5, and then 7->CS's, there are old
actions that have to be re-learned. In the case of the Layers Palette, I
agree, that it seemed counter-intuitive at first, but I soon grew to love it.
This is why I keep an older version, or two, on my machines, until I have
become accoustomed to the new way of doing things. With a client breathing
down you neck, you do not have time for F1 all the tiime.

I only read the first reactions (link) and me too, at first, had those
feelings about the layer palette.
But after getting used to it (took about a week) I am very happy with the
way things work now.
Multiple selections of layers to move, merge, scale, distort... without
having to link them is a real timesaver.
And if needed, you still can link them. Shift-Select the layers and click
the link icon.
Work with the keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-E, Alt-Ctrl-E...) and you're in
heaven :-)
The little arrow flyout menu also has lot's of other options to work with
layers too.
Once you forget how it used to work, it is very intuïtive.
Happy practising!

Re: layer pallet questions

As usual if I done a bit more Googling before posting I would have
answered my own question! Indeed the linking feature has changed in
CS2. Multiple selecting is not that hard to adjust to but there is some
difference of opinion on this "improvement". See below.

Re: layer pallet questions

I haven't used CS2 yet, so I do not know. I wonder how CS2 denotes a
painting layer vs. mask layer vs. adjustment layer if not with that
little icon.

Re: layer pallet questions

Is there a setting that allows me to have the checkbox in the layer
pallet in CS2?

Re: layer pallet questions

Yes. Also, it was always possible to select a layer by just clicking on
it. As far as I can remember.
