Opening PSD Files in Illustrator.

Running CS2 w/ updates,
I made a NEW file in photoshop, .. 24in x 52 in, .. 400 pixels per in, Color
RGB mode, don't edit or add anything, just save the file (as a psd file).
Illustrator will not open the file saying.... "Photoshop file not readable".
(same error either opening or placing the file)
I gradually went down in pix / in to see where the file would open in
Illustrator ...
At 352 pixels per in, (18,304 px width, 8448 px high), the file opens NO
PROBLEMs at all in Illlustrator.
At 353 pixels per in (and up), (18,356 px x 8472 px) the file gives
"Photoshop file not readable" when I try to open in Illlustrator.
Can someone enlighten me on this?? I thought I could at least go 30,000
pixels and import over into Illustrator.
Maybe someone could try and duplicate this on your machine, .... to see if
my problem is related to something specific in my system or settings, vs.
CS2 software...
thanks in advance ...
Allen
PS... the actual file I'm trying to get into Illustrator (to add text) is
24in x 52in x 450 px/in w/ RGB mode w/ 5 channels. (no layers)

Re: Opening PSD Files in Illustrator.

In article <ALidnVLSXtv9AZfYnZ2dnUVZ_qednZ2d@insightbb.com>,
Place it in InDesign, not Illustrator, to add your text. Illustrator is
not a page layout program; InDesign is. Right tool for the job and all
that.

Re: Opening PSD Files in Illustrator.

How much more definitive do you need, if that is exactly what happened?
(which at this point, seems pretty darn likely).

Re: Opening PSD Files in Illustrator.

I think it would be obvious that there are limits to what Illustrator can
accept as valid file sizes.
I was looking for a more definitive/precise answer to my question though.

1248x353
You're right, I forgot to square it.
But still, even though my numbers are off, my theory on pixel limitation
still stands :)

Re: Opening PSD Files in Illustrator.

I have a 5 channel (all spot colors) image drawn in Photoshop that I need to
take over to Illustrator to add TEXT before going to the printer.
It will not go over to iLL.
neither will teh test file, ... but it's easier to duplicate on someone
elses machine., should they want to try and help.
?? I'm confused.... 24 in x 52 in = 1248 sq inches. x (353 x 353 px)
124,609 px per sq in. = 155,512,032 total pixels.
How did you figure 440K pixels?

Re: Opening PSD Files in Illustrator.

That's funky. I'm still using Illustrator 9 and PS 7, so I can't give
you specifics, but maybe it'd be easier to just start the image in
Illustrator, then export it with a higher resolution? (I don't
understand why you started an empty image in PS if you were only going
to bring it into Illy anyway).
Actually, it's my understanding that adobe products have a specific
pixel limitation (if you do the math, you'll see that at 353 ppi, your
image is just over 440 thousand pixels, and at 352, just under 440
thousand, so it's possible, even probable, that it has a maximum pixel
tolerance of around 440 thousand pixels (older versions of PS could only
handle about 30000 pixels, so 440000 is a huge improvement). I'm
guessing you maxed it out.
Try exporting the image from Illustrator, at different resolutions, and
see what errors it gives you.
