Do not see affect of Color Settings

I am using Photoshop 6 to view a grayscale TIF image.
I read that if I Edit the Color Settings for Dot Gain, the image I am
viewing should show the affect of the changes.
When I Edit the Color Settings and choose a profile such as US
Defaults with Dot Gain set to 30%, I do not notice any difference in
the image displayed versus 10% or just setting Color Management off.
Is there something else I have to do to see the image with dot gain
applied?

Mike Russell answered this on another group:
Color Settings affects only your default profiles. It does not change
the settings for any existing image. Use Assign Profile instead, and
you'll see the change you expect.
