Placing layers within layers/objects within objects

I know this is a really easy one..as i used to do it quite a few years ago
in a snap...but yesterday i drew a complete blank.
Task:. I needed to place some photos inside the major continents of the
world.
I brought in each continent from Illy and they were all on their own layers.
I then used copy and "paste into" to get the photos inside each continent.
but i KNOW i remember a better way of doing this!!!! IF i am correct...i
think it was a simple key stroke that linked the layers together and i could
easily edit afterwards. THis effect is widley used to put a graphic within
text.
I know this is an easy one...and the paste into worked fine yesterday...but
its driving me nuts that i cant remember how to do it the other way. I
think it was using a clipping path.

There is (in CS) Layer>Create Clipping Mask (Ctrl-G). In earlier
versions it was called "Group with Previous" or somesuch, but they
changed it. I have just used the other method for years and am used to it.

ok...but why doesnt photoshop give you this option without using an alt key
press? I was looking at clipping paths and trying to group stuff together
and all....is there somewhere on the normal toolbars or menus where this
lives...just in case i forget in another year?

YES!!!!

i KNEW there was a simple key stroke involved!!!!! ITs just one of those
things that if you dont do it for a long time you forget.

Put the graphic you want "inside" on a layer above the "container"
Alt-click on the line between the layers to make a Clipping Group.
