Re: Nikon 10 Meg D70 replacement in 20 days

Yes, BUT, the camera division is that which is visible to the public
eye, so I find it extremely unlikely that Nikon is seen as anything but
a camera company by most people anywhere in the world, including Japan.

Re: Nikon 10 Meg D70 replacement in 20 days

Actually, Nikon's core competency is in *optics*. A very large part of
their revenue comes from extremely high-end optics, such as those used
to reduce wafer masks in chip fabs, or other industrial or scientific
instruments.
While that's related to consumer-grade 35mm lenses, I'd put forth the
argument that Nikon builds and sells "35mm" cameras only as a means to
get people to spend more on lenses -- although the rapidly-obselete
nature of digicams has changed that dynamic in recent years.

No, he's right about that, though I believe Mitsubishi keeps a distance
and lets Nikon execs make the calls concerning Nikon. What I doubt is
that Japanese don't see Nikon as a camera company. I call "bullshit"
to that.

In article <1153627997.884819.258410@p79g2000cwp.googlegroups.com>,
There are many non-natives living in Japan -- college, business, etc.
That said, I've never heard anything about Mitsubishi impeding Nikon's
camera business. Can anyone even confirm that Mitsubishi and Nikon have
a business relationship?

Nikon had better get a new source of sensors really quick! It is never a
bright idea to compete with your supplier!

Re: Nikon 10 Meg D70 replacement in 20 days

Nikon, Inc. is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric. They call the shots on
what Nikon does. At the present time, Nikon is known in Japan more as a
maker of high quality chip making products than as a make of photo
equipment.

Maybe we can see how serious Mitsubishi Electric is about keeping Nikon in
the camera business.

The message <313030303138393544BF9DCA31@deryck.com>
from deryck lant <deryck@deryck.com> contains these words:
Apologies to Canon fans - that is not what I should have said. I should
have said:
The new Nikon, as usual, will be aggressively priced. The entry of Sony
into the DSLR market is going to benefit everybody. Sony own the
professional camcorder imaging market and their technical prowess is
colossal. They have stated they aim to be No.2 in the DSLR market and
in 2007 the gloves will be off. We are all in for a very exciting ride.
