Just bought a canon tlb

I admit it was a kind of impulse buy, but i have wanted an older film
slr for quite some time.
upon the exchange of money and camera (with flash), i inspected it.
shutter works, etc. but i have no idea if it will take pictures or not.
i think my first priority will be to get the camera thoroughly cleaned
and refoamed (there is a lot of dust and foam bits on the lens inside
the body.)
also a minor thing is i need a battery for the light meter.
if any of you do camera repairs or have had this kid of stuff done to
your vintage 35 mm cams, how much did you pay for it? i just want a
rough estimate, i know that prices vary from place to place.
thanks,
angel

Re: just bought a canon tlb

I found that my Nikormat FTN would meter correctly with a 1.5 volt battery
by setting the ASA setting of the meter to the ISO speed plus 2/3 of an
F-STOP. For example, ISO 400 film would be set to 320, 100 to 64, etc.
I would not do this for "regular" color negative film. My experience
has been that the usual consumer grade C-41 film works better with a
full stop overexposure, so just letting it overexpose by 2/3 of a stop
will not be noticable.
For slide film not compensating would be a disaster, and for regular
Black and White film, it would change the results slightly. If you do plan
to do regular Black and White film (i.e. non C-41) and process it at home,
I would take a roll or two of film and bracket your exposures anyway.
Once you have a set of negatives, you can pick the film speed that suits
your processing, printing (or scanning) set up and taste.

No, the TLB takes a 1.35 volt mercury battery (check Canon's website...one
would assume their information would be correct).
The camera will not meter correctly with the higher voltage of the PX625A.

it's a tlb. and i just need a PX625A battery. i paid $50 for the
outfit. i figue i'm going to pay a lot more to have it fixed up but eh,
whatever.
there are dozens of camera shops around me that i'm sure do these kinda
of repairs. i think i'll go to one and get quoted

Your first problem is finding someone willing to work on the camera. I
would not hazard a guess at how much it would cost except that the cost is
likely to be far more than you paid for the camera.
You could try to clean it out some. Then you could run a roll of film
through. You use the sunny f16 rule for exposure; thus for testing you do
not need a working exposure meter. The roll of film will tell you lots
about the condition of the shutter.

Look at last week's postings under "Wein Cell Battery" - there is a
discussion there on batteries for the FT-b.

Try looking up www.essexcamera.com. They publish their
repair prices but they are not the cheapest. Try www.pentaxrepairs.com.
also. He's about the best, I believe.
