The tour guide at my local zoological garden says the reason the polar
bears' fur looks yellow is: each of those big exterior hairs is a
hollow, white tube. Some kind of flora (mold or fungus) gets in there
and thrives. The hair itself is still white; the organism inside is
the coloring agent.
Just for information.
