Strange noise on scanned negatives

Hi all,
Just last week I got my new Coolscan V and it's been great. I do have a
question however. Some photos come out virtually free of any grain or
noise, totally smooth and pin sharp. Others contain a sizable amount of
noise/grain. I can imagine this varying across different rolls of film,
but these differences occur on the same strip of film even on adjacent
frames. I'd like to know what causes this noise and more importantly,
what can I do about it?
I'm scanning negatives from a trip to Prague in 2002, shot on Agfa
Superia 200 if memory serves me right. There's no brand on the film edge
so I can't check for certain.
If you'd like to see examples, I can post them on a webserver somewhere.
Just let me know.

Don is part of it, he and someone are busy faking postings back and
forth. It has gotten so bad that I am just staying away, it is a no
win situation for anybody, including don.

Re: Strange noise on scanned negatives

If you mean the "Don" factor, I understand and because of his incessant
crap, I've stayed away. But, for specific things I do go there, and if
Bas were to post there he would get useful information assuming he has
reasonably thick skin and the ability to sort wheat/chaff.
Cheers,
Alan

On C41 film (color negatives) you'll see nasty grain in the
thinnest part of the film, or in underexposed frames.
If you don't mind waiting, you can reduce (but not kill)
the grain with oversampling. Beyond 4x or 8x there's not
much point.
The Coolscans tend to be fairly brutal in reproducing
film grain, because of their non-diffuse LED illumination.
On the plus side, it's part of what makes these scanners
very sharp.

comp.periphs.scanners is just about gone as a useful site due to some
rather
bitter fighting going on there. I have just given up on the site and
am staying away.

Re: Strange noise on scanned negatives

What scan software are you using? What settings? What film?
It would be good if you would post a few and also refer your problem to
