20D LIKES IT HOT !

Whew! Another scorcher out there today so the 20D decided to "take it
deep."
Today's pics start here:

BTW, how come when it's 100 degrees in Minnesota, New York, or Maine
it's called a "crisis?"
Down here, we just call it "Summer."

And to expand a bit on it, the scanner itself (my unit anyway) is
capable of resolving detail around 140 cycles/mm (similar to 140
lp/mm) with adequate modulation to squeeze most info out of the film
(often limited to around 100 lp/mm), if it offers it:
In fact, detail on most films (due to the combined MTF of lens+film)
has a hard time reaching 80 cycles/mm. A fine match for this scanner,
a bit harder for others.
In fact the scanner resolves a single pixel (= 4.7 micron) wide
scratch on this film:
<http://www.xs4all.nl/~bvdwolf/main/downloads/Minolta_DSE5400_5400_scratch.jpg>
, detail that was unavailable in that image itself. If you zoom in on
that crop, you'll see the almost horizontal scratch, transition from
one row to the next.

SNIP
<http://www.xs4all.nl/~bvdwolf/main/foto/scan/se5400/se5400-5.htm> .
It does assume a quality film image as input. If the detail is not in
the film, the DSE5400 can't retrieve it (although it'll reduce grain
aliasing, but thats another benefit).
Resolution differences can also quantified;
<http://www.xs4all.nl/~bvdwolf/main/foto/scan/se5400/se5400-1.htm>
but again it all depends on a good lens, good focus, a good tripod or
a very steady hand and/or high shutterspeed, and possibly mirror
lock-up (for shutterspeeds in the 1/15th of a second range).
GIGO (garbage in, garbage out), still rules.

Re: 20D LIKES IT HOT !

It might well come your way after - and if - I hear from Doug. Fact, it
might go the rounds, as Mark T wants it as well. I'll keep you posted.

It was mostly my shoulders, back and thighs, actually. )O; Ouuuch!!
Strangely I have never returned to waterskiing..
(oh, did you mean the bit about Doug? sorry!)
Anyway I still spend a lot of my time in the brine, but when I see
jellies, even if I know they are a non-stinging species (used to work
in a marine lab so I know most of the locals, and they're not *all*
bad!), it nevertheless becomes time for me to dry off..

Re: 20D LIKES IT HOT !

No, I see you. :)
I had no memory of kill-filing you anyway...
Ah, yes. He doesn't like to leave "evidence" around for long...
Well its good you got that off your chest!

Re: 20D LIKES IT HOT !

Well, you may not see this, Mark, because you have possibly killfiled
me during a heated exchange with Douglas.. But the 'troll mark' he is
talking about would be me.
If I am, I'm intrigued on how I'm in there but Douglas isn't.
(sniff... - seems just a little unfair - Douglas can say what he likes,
but I have no right of reply as far as you are concerned..? sniff,
sob.. oh well, whatever. I probably never say anything useful
anyway....(O;)
Me, allegedly. Douglas has yet to actually quote one of my lies. The
'stealing pictures' relates to my habit of reposting his images after
he inevitably, rapidly pulls them. It's all been done to death
elsewhere, and I won't make it worse here.
This is after all about Annika's image, which I like.. But I think I
would have preferred a little less dark (ie a lighter blue) background
for a better balanced/more realistic image. Yes, I know he probably
had no/little control over the lighting, but to me it looks too much
like so many other scientific images - taken under highly controlled
conditions and with a view to placing it next to hundreds of other
images for species identification purposes... I like seeing marine
animals in realistic habitats and lighting.
(Although, on that memorable day when i was learning to ski (sadly,
wetsuitless) and came down amongst a large swarm of sting-laden
relatives of that guy... *then* I would have preferred them in a tank..)

Who is this "Tim", and why is anyone responding to his demands?

Re: 20D LIKES IT HOT !

Actually, Tim, the issues at hand (which bring on these silly fights) are
VERY MUCH on topic, as they revolve around film print enlargement claims,
print resolution requirements, sample print opinions and more. It is
completely on-topic. Its just that it involves one unstable person who
seems bent on making claims they can't back up. And so it goes...
Seriously, Tim...enough of the "off-topic" skipping record from you... You
either haven't been paying attention...or...you're simply too new to
understand that the context is quite on-topic.

"You?" I think you'll find I am only barely involved.
But clearly you aren't aware of the issues, as the old, tired conflict has
nothing whatever to do with anti-film or pro-digital debate.

Re: 20D LIKES IT HOT !

In article <w8dBg.13028$lv.6473@fed1read12>,
When I keep deleting posts but the same post reappears day after day, I
do get curious and open up a few posts. My current read of this thread
is that one person is getting ganged up on by several of the same people
who gang up on pro-film posts. This thing has turned into a soap opera
between all of you.
