Nikon 80-400VR

Anyone have any experience with this lens?
Noisy?
Slow focus
Sharp/unsharp
Hoping the VR helps with hand tremors. I have a D100, Sigma 50-500 & Nikor
80-200 2.8 non VR
Thanks

In other words, just so everyone understands what you wrote, the
autofocus is so slow that you need to use manual focus techniques with
moving subjects.

Re: Nikon 80-400VR

Hi Jerry,
a fairly subjective comment. If the proof is in the saleability of shots,
then mine has paid for itself many times over shot wide open.
Perhaps a more objective way of putting it would be: "for my type of work,
which is.. blah blah... my 80-400 has proven to be best when shot in the f8
to f16 range...".

Sometimes my scientific approach to life can be sooo boring. :-)
PS. Apologies to you Jerry for hitting the wrong button and sending this to
your email. *naughty*

Re: Nikon 80-400VR

The lens works providing you keep it in the f8 to f16 range.
Some sample images may be seen at:

It works OK on a Nikon D50 body, and on a F6 [film] body.

Re: Nikon 80-400VR

...
Hi,
I've had one since they first came out and have had a lot of joy with it,
even using it professionally for a number of motorsports events. As was
regularly pointed out to me, I was often the only Nikon user amongst a sea
of Canons, but their laughter soon turned to quiet back in the press room as
we 'chimped' our shots on screen.
Yes, it is not the fastest focus lens out there (we sometimes call it the
'huntsman') but with practice, you can take very saleable shots with
prefocus technique - shooting everything from MotoGP to the Porsche Cup
series here in Oz where vehicles were travelling at speeds near 300 km/h.
For the money it is a wonderful piece of glass and the VR does work - just
be sure to RTFM first, especially regarding mounting it to a tripod.
As for tripod mounting, I would recommend that you buy the mount from Kirk
(see http://www.kirkphoto.com/lenscollars.html). This really does transform
the lens in the field.
So if you're after a big range in the one lens, don't mind lugging it around
(though 1/2 the weight and a fraction of the $$ of the 300 f/2.8), are
prepared to do some practice, then you'll not be disappointed.
Just my opinion for what it's worth.
Cheers,
Dave E (Sydney)
