Speedlite 580 EX w/420 slave question

I have a 580 EX set as the master unit, and a single 420 set to slave. The
420 is set at the default A group setting.
I want to have the 420 at a lower output than the 580, so I go to the ratio
function on the 580. The ratio is stated as A:B. Which is A in this
situation? I would assume that the master 580 is A and the single slave B,
yet the 420 sits in slave group A.
I guess I could run some tests, but I'm using film and I'd rather know
sooner than later.
Thanks.

That's what I'm going to do.
Thanks.

You could dial in the maximum ratio (difference) in the flashes and
visually determine which one is reduced.
