PING: Ken Nadvornick

Ken, can you e-mail me at annika1980ATaol.com?
I just watched that documentary on James Nachtwey ("War Photographer")
and it got me wanting to do some more B&W shooting with the Fabulous
EOS-1V.
Anyway, I have some B&W questions for ya. One of them concerns B&W
film choices so if anyone else has any suggestions along those lines
I'd love to hear them. My limited B&W shooting has been done with
Tri-X and T-Max. I'd like to go for something like ISO400 with very
little grain.

Marshall himself is now 70 - maybe there's something to be said for
using a lot of dope. I bought his book "Not Fade Away" from that site
and I think its one of the best photographic books I won. Check out what
he sells his prints for...

Re: PING: Ken Nadvornick

I'm surprised. That one is actually quite good.

These are my views. If you've got a problem with it, you can blame it on
me, but this is what I think. I am not the official spokes-person for

Re: PING: Ken Nadvornick

I am familiar with his work. His pics are interesting largely because
he had such interesting subjects. Sadly, many of his subjects (Joplin,
Hendrix, etc.) are now dead and some of them like Keith Richards are
pretty close.

Not bad.
If you want to get inspired by B&W you should visit
www.jimmarshallvault.com and see what he does with old Leica M2s and
Tri-X.

Re: PING: Ken Nadvornick

Yeah, maybe I'll go around town shooting pics of signs and
advertisements.
Until then, here's a few I've converted from color to B&W:

And here's a couple that were actually shot in B&W:

The whole purpose of shooting B&W is to create atmosphere. Grain is very
much a part of that, which is why some of the worlds most memorable news
images were shot with film like Tri-X that can be pushed and pulled
outrageously.
If you want to shoot fine grain B&W you need to be looking at 100 ISO
film. But even that has its grain. Besides, all a guy like you really
need do, is to invest in the Photoshop plugin called Alien Skin Exposure
and you can have your pick of B&W (or colour) film lookalikes for
digital.
I personally can't wait to read Daniel Rocha's comments when you start
posting your efforts.

Re: Ken Nadvornick

That probaby is what did happen. But I didn't like it on graded paper,
either.

Re: Ken Nadvornick

ICE assumes a certain film structure that B&W does not have. So you'll
get an image that is blue shifted (orange mask removal) and perhaps
softer (ICE).
Give it a shot.

Re: Ken Nadvornick

Actually, there's a thought.... With the orange base, how would you go
about using variable contrast papers - the orange base would annihilate
the effect of the different colour filters for different contrast would
it not? I haven't tried this but just thinking about it, I'm pretty sure
that's what would happen.

Re: Ken Nadvornick

Yes. The software that came with my KM Dimage scan elite 5400 II, won't
allow me to use ICE with B&W film scanning.......I suppose I could lie to
the machine and tell it that it was scanning color negative film, and then
try to clean it up in Photoshop, but I haven't tried that yet........
