Re: Is 12x optical zoom ona 10 mp digital camera good enough for shooting surfers from the beach? Thanks! On Tue, 29 Aug 2006 12:10:05 -0700, Bob Williams You are confusing the magnification factor of binoculars (their "X" factor) with the zoom range factor. A demonstration: let's take a simple zoom lens of, say, 50-100mm. This is a 2x zoom. At the long end, the magnification factor is two times that of the short end. Even if we go to a lens with a longer zoom factor (say, 5x), the same holds true. The idea above (that we should use a "normal" focal length of 50mm as "1X magnification") fails when the zoom lens starts at a FL less than 50mm ("normal"). A 6x zoom has 6x magnification over its zoom range. It is possible to say that a given, specific zoom lens has a maximum magnification that closely approxomates (or even matches exactly) a specific binocular, but it's not right to say that as any general rule or expression, and to do so gives the wrong impression. The lens in question is, in fact, a 6x lens, and it's maximum magnification is, in fact, 6x it's minimum (which is, by definition, 1x). -- Bill Funk replace "g" with "a" Bill Funk
